Treasure Valley thunderstorms build over the Owyhees and the Boise Front on hot afternoons from May into July and roll across the valley floor with hail, cloudbursts and outflow winds. June 27, 2026 was the one people will remember for a while: Meridian took soft hail for most of an hour between 8 and 9 PM, enough that streets flooded as it melted, Caldwell got more than an inch of rain in fifteen minutes, and Canyon County declared a local disaster emergency. A month earlier, on May 25, thunderstorm gusts near 60 mph blew the roof off the Alaska Air Cargo building at the Boise Airport and knocked out power across the valley.
What that weather does to a roof depends on the roof. A new architectural shingle shrugs off inch hail. A 20-year-old three-tab from the 2002–2008 boom — which is most of Meridian — is brittle enough that the same stone bruises the mat and the next wind creases the tab. The bruise doesn't leak that day. It sheds granules, the exposed asphalt bakes in the sun, and the crack opens up a year or two later, usually in a January thaw. That's why we inspect after every storm and why we chalk a test square on every slope: a handful of hits is a repair, and eight or more per 10×10 square on most slopes is a roof.

Questions we get about hail & wind damage
How big does hail have to be to damage a roof?
On a healthy architectural shingle, about 1¼ inches. On a 15-to-20-year-old three-tab in the Treasure Valley, an inch will do it, because high-desert UV has already baked the shingle brittle. Wind-driven hail hits harder than the size suggests, and that's why we count hits inside a square rather than guess from the stone size.
The storm was months ago. Is it too late?
No, but don't wait. Most Idaho policies give you a year or more to file from the date of loss, and bruises take a year or two to become leaks anyway. The catch is that later storms muddy the picture, so the sooner the damage is documented and tied to its storm, the cleaner the claim.
A roofer knocked on my door after the storm. Should I sign?
Not on the porch. The Idaho Department of Insurance's first red flags are unsolicited door-knockers claiming insurance expertise and promises of free upgrades or deductible waivers. Get the inspection, get the photos, check the DOPL registration, and sign when you've read the contract.
Can hail damage a metal roof?
It can dent exposed-fastener panels and, in a big storm, standing seam. Dents are usually cosmetic on a metal roof and most policies exclude them, so a metal roof is a good answer to the hail problem — see metal roofing.
Do you cover the deductible?
No. Idaho Code 41-348 makes it unlawful for a contractor to make a practice of waiving, rebating or paying a homeowner's deductible, and a roofer who offers is telling you how they run their business. You pay your deductible; the rest of the job is exactly the scope your carrier approved.
